The MAPFRE team has completed its squad for the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race.
The last two spots to compete for the MAPFRE team were bagged by two female sailors. They are the superstar of the Volvo Ocean Race Sophie Ciszek and gold medalist Tamara Echegoyen from Spain. With these female additions to the MAPFRE Volvo Race team, there is no doubt that there will be more experience and greater motivation among the team members.
The addition of Echegoyen creates a record of sorts for the MAPFRE team as they now have five Olympic medalists in their team. This shows that the MAPFRE team is loaded with big racing experience and they also know how to win big events. Echegoyen said that she was happy to be part of the MAPFRE team. Her months of hard work have paid off and she was very happy with the results that she has put up. She said that she was able to improve quite a lot because of the long hours that she has put on the boat. She also thanked everyone for the help that she received so far.
Ciszeck will be competing in the Volvo Ocean Race for the second time running. She had earlier raced on-board the Team SCA in the year 2014-15. She now joins the Xabi Fernandez team and will be looking to make another great impression during the race. Ciszeck said that she has an idea of what to do at the event and she has all the experience and the ideas needed to take part in such a big race. She is looking forward to serving her team well during the race and wants to be competitive at the event.
The 2017-18 fleet will assemble at the Gosport for the UK Leg that will kick off in less than a week’s time.
